Elliot Embleton and Corry Evans have been out of action long-term but are now not far away from resuming full training
After his loan stint at Derby County ended, Elliot Embleton is “not a million miles” away from returning to training with the rest of the Sunderland team, according to Michael Beale. On deadline day, the midfielder signed a season-long contract with the League One team in an attempt to return to action after missing the previous campaign due to a fractured leg.
However, Embleton had only appeared in two games for the Rams when he had a major thigh injury during training. As a result, he had to have surgery and went back to Wearside to continue his recuperation. Additionally, his time at Derby was officially ended early this week. As a result, he will be free to return to Sunderland as soon as he is fit or move on loan to another team later in the month.
The academy product must first finish his recuperation, though, and head coach Beale says the 24-year-old is getting closer to that goal. “He doesn’t seem like he’s a million miles away from rejoining the group,” Beale said.
He is one of the individuals that works with the performance team to ensure that he receives the greatest possible rehabilitation. He’s back here now that his loan at Derby is coming to an end, and we’ll evaluate him further whenever he’s ready to leave.
“He’s obviously a boy who knows this club and knows what it takes to play for this club, so I’ve no doubt that he’s going to be champing at the bit to contribute.”
When Embleton was injured at Hull City in December 2022, it was his last game for Sunderland. Midfielder Corry Evans, another long-term absentee, is getting closer to returning to training, but Beale thinks the
Northern Ireland internation will still need to wait around a month to join the rest of the team.
A year ago, during the victory over Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light, Evans suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament. “Corry is a little bit away,” Beale stated.
“They told me he was still a few months away when I got in. It will likely be four or five weeks before he returns to the team, as I have been gone for almost four weeks.
