Written by Cem Yolbulan at 9:30 AM PDT Getty Images/Jamie Schwaberow The Los Angeles Lakers were freely humiliated before this week when UConn lead trainer Dan Hurley turned them down in spite of a six-year, $70 million deal. Now that the Lakers have gone back to the drawing board, JJ Redick is expected to win the job. Redick doesn’t seem to mind that he was picked second to Dan Hurley, which is good news for the Lakers. As per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the previous Duke star and Lakers GM Loot Pelinka have talked as of late and Redick “comprehends and acknowledges” Lakers’ quest for Hurley. According to sources, “Redick understands and accepts Pelinka’s lengthy pursuit of Connecticut coach Dan Hurley that initially stalled Redick’s candidacy.” Pelinka and Redick have spoken on the phone in recent days. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski This is superb information for the Lakers. The ownership and front office cannot afford to lose another head coach. A positive sign is Redick’s willingness to continue the process despite being put on the back burner while Los Angeles attempted to persuade Hurley. Redick was long thought to be LeBron James’ preferred choice. James clearly admires Redick’s basketball intelligence because of their podcast. LeBron would be much more likely to remain in Los Angeles if Redick were hired. This summer, LeBron James has the option to opt out and become a free agent. The assumption is that he would likely re-sign with the Lakers, particularly assuming Redick turns into the lead trainer. After that, the front office still has a lot of work to do in free agency and the trade market to ensure that this team’s window for winning the championship for the next few years is open.
