Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup final versus Chelsea at Stamford Bridge ended with Newcastle United’s dreams of making it that far.
After Callum Wilson’s solo goal put Newcastle ahead, Mykhailo Mudryk equalized in stoppage time thanks to a late error by Kieran Trippier.
The England full-back missed his penalty, and Chelsea scored four goals in a row until Matt Ritchie’s attempt was saved to advance the home team to the semifinals.
In order to go to the quarterfinals, Eddie Howe’s team had already defeated Manchester United and City, but they now faced Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues in London in another difficult match.
After missing time due to injury, Sven Botman returned to the starting lineup for the Toon, although Emil Krafth and Anthony Gordon also suffered injuries throughout the ninety minutes.
Howe will be furious that Moises Caicedo’s horrific challenge on Gordon only resulted in a yellow card and that Chelsea weren’t reduced to 10 men in less than two minutes.
Before a hilarious breakaway saw Newcastle take the lead, Conor Gallagher curled a fantastic effort off the crossbar for Chelsea.
Wilson, an England striker on his own, got control after Levi Colwill made a careless pass, and he went straight after Thiago Silva and Benoit Badiashile.
Young Badiashile appeared to have handled the issue as he dribbled past the Brazilian, but Wilson re-entered the game with a terrible touch and curled into the top corner for a 1-0 lead on minute sixteen.
Raheem Sterling believed he had found an equalizer for Chelsea as his strike beat Martin Dubravka, but Bruno Guimaraes blocked it on the line.
However, Mudryk’s header went wide for an equalizer, and Trippier—who had come on for the injured Krafth—let the winger curl past Dubravka to make it 1-1.
The right-back for England has had a difficult time lately, having had terrible performances at Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, so it was expected that he would miss his penalty.
Newcastle lost another cup after goals from Mudryk, Cole Palmer, Christopher Nkunku, and Gallagher.
