On February 11, after suffering one of the most heartbreaking losses in Bills history, Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs were able to win the game in part because of a rule change.
Mahomes gave Bills supporters a slight slice to the wound after Sunday’s by making a reference to that awful game.
The NFL modified the rule to enable each team to have at least one possession following significant criticism of that game; this ended up being very advantageous for the Chiefs on Sunday. After winning the overtime coin toss, the 49ers managed to score a field goal on their first drive. However, on the following play, Mahomes was able to guide his team to a touchdown drive that would win the game.
The New Overtime Regulations Help Patrick Mahomes
The Super Bowl went into overtime for the second time on Sunday, and it was the first since the NFL implemented new regulations guaranteeing that every team would get at least one possession. The rule was altered after the 2021 postseason, when Mahomes’ team moved into position for a game-tying field goal and then marched down the field to win on the opening possession of overtime after the Bills had taken the lead over the Chiefs with 13 seconds remaining but were unable to hold it.
In his post-Super Bowl statements, Mahomes made reference to the famed “13 seconds” game, as Scott Chasen of the Kansas City Star observed on X.
We can now apply the rule in both ways because we modified it. Mahomes remarked, “I’m not sure how they’re going to adjust it this time.
Following his team’s victory over the Bills, Mahomes continued to seem displeased with the league’s decision to alter the rule, according to Chasen, who wrote a piece following the game.
