England star Martin agrees new deal with Leicester Tigers

After graduating from the Tigers’ academy, Martin, a 22-year-old lock who shone for England in the Rugby World Cup, has decided to sign a “multi-year deal” to stay with Leicester.

England lock George Martin has agreed a new contract with Leicester Tigers after playing a starring role at this year’s Rugby World Cup.

Throughout the competition, the 22-year-old stood out for Steve Borthwick’s team, and in the semi-final, he gave an incredible performance against South Africa.

After making his initial breakthrough into the Tigers group back in 2019, he now appears poised for a great international career.

In Sunday’s Investec Champions Cup triumph over Stade Francais, Martin made his comeback to Tigers action, and his physical strength in defense and with the ball in hand was just as clear as it was in October when he played on the international stage in Paris.

Unsurprisingly, the Tigers have taken steps to lock down their standout academy alum, announcing in a statement that they have agreed to a “multi-year deal”.

“I’m really happy to be staying with Tigers,” declared Martin.

“After going through the Academy here, I get to play for a fantastic club with my friends, come to work every day, and I’m excited to work with Dan (head coach of the Tigers), develop in our program, and work with Dan.”

“Playing for this club in Leicester is unique, and it was nice to come back on the field last week. Exeter is another major challenge for our bunch. I can’t wait to return to Mattioli Woods Welford Road, my hometown.”

Richard Wilks, general manager of Leicester, acknowledged that the Rugby World Cup confirmed to the world what the Tigers have long known about Martin: that they have a true star on their hands.

“For our club, seeing a young man come in as an academy player and develop to where George is now, knowing he’s still got so much growth, is tremendously rewarding,” Wilks said.

“George’s future as a player was revealed by the Rugby World Cup, and he has now returned from the tournament to showcase his leadership potential.

“He’s a player with Tiger’s DNA running through him; tough, physical and committed and we’re delighted he’s committed his future to the Club.”

Having completed the club’s academy,

Dan McKellar, head coach of the Tigers, stated: “George is a fantastic young athlete who has room to grow in our program.

“At 22, he’s already got the physical tools and the mentality to perform at a high level and I’ve been really impressed with him since he’s returned to the club from the World Cup.”
