EDDIE Howe has allayed fears that Dan Ashworth, Newcastle’s highly esteemed and vital sporting director, would sign a contract with Manchester United by stating that he is “here for the long term”.
Ashworth, who only joined the Magpies a little over a year ago, is supposedly INEOS’s Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s top target. Sir Jim is currently in the midst of finalizing a 25% acquisition of Manchester United.
Sir Dave Brailsford, a close ally of Ratcliffe, will lead a new group responsible for managing football operations, and Ashworth is reportedly the person they want in control at Old Trafford.
Howe claims to have “no doubts” over Ashworth’s loyalty to the Magpies, despite the fact that he hasn’t discussed the rumors with Ashworth personally.
“Of course I’ve spoken to Dan but not necessarily about that,” he replied.
“Whether it’s a player or someone in Dan’s shoes, it’s very hard to comment on rumors. Although I’m sure Dan is here to stay, that’s definitely more of an issue for him than for me.
Ashworth established himself as the FA’s director of elite development before moving on to Brighton as technical director, where he once again made an impression. Ashworth has previously been connected to Manchester United.
Since joining Newcastle last year, he has been a crucial part of the team’s growth during the previous 12 months.
Howe stated: “I believe that when someone has the kind of role that Dan has, they are extremely important and have done a great job supporting us in many different ways. He is involved in all decision-making at the football club, whether it be in the building departments or on the training ground.
“He’s hugely important and has been a really calming influence behind the scenes, his vast experience has really helped.”
